Fishing in Gabon
No other place in West Africa is as untouched as Gabon. Picturesque beaches, forests, and lagoons line the coast, which, like the wildlife and fisheries, remain in their pristine state. Fishing pressure is spread across a few local boats and two fishing tour operators, making this area one of the least fished in the world. Shore fishing is excellent, as is boat fishing. In Gabon, all types of fishing promise success!
Fishing spots in Gabon
1. Loango National Park
- Features: Loango is famous for its spectacular coastline and the variety of fish that migrate between the river mouths and the open sea.
- Target fish: Cubera snapper, barracuda, African threadfin
- Special features: Popping along the reef edges and sandbanks is particularly effective. Jigging in deeper areas often brings amberjacks and large groupers to the hook
2. Sassandra Canyon (offshore)
- Features: This deep-water canyon off the coast is a paradise for jigging enthusiasts.
- Target species: Yellowfin tuna, amberjack, grouper.
- Special features: The area is known for its strong currents, which attract large fish – a challenge for experienced jigging anglers. World record-sized fish are possible here!
3. Setté Cama
- Features: A legendary spot for anglers, where the Ogooué River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
- Target species: Tarpon, cubera snapper, African threadfin
- Special features: The transition zone between fresh and salt water is probably one of the best shore fishing spots in the world. Night fishing for tarpon is particularly popular.
