Cape Verde offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the Atlantic due to its location, deep waters, and rich marine biodiversity. Anglers from all over the world visit the islands to fish for species such as marlin, tuna, wahoo, and more. Jigging has become more and more popular over the last years as you can land monsterous amberjack and almaco jack. 

Fishing spots:

1. Mindelo, São Vicente

  • Description: Mindelo is considered one of the best places in Cape Verde for big-game fishing, particularly for blue marlin. The waters off São Vicente are deep and nutrient-rich, attracting a wide variety of species.
  • Fish Species: Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado.
  • Best Season: April to October for marlin, year-round for tuna and wahoo.

2. Santa Maria, Sal

  • Description: Sal is a popular island for fishing, particularly for shore fishing and deep-sea fishing charters. The island’s warm waters are home to an abundance of fish species.
  • Fish Species: Wahoo, tuna, barracuda, dorado.
  • Best Season: May to October.

3. Praia, Santiago

  • Description: Santiago, the largest of the Cape Verde islands, offers great opportunities for offshore fishing as well as inshore fishing around its rocky coastline. Praia, the capital city, has many fishing charters available.
  • Fish Species: Swordfish, tuna, barracuda, grouper.
  • Best Season: March to June for swordfish, year-round for other species.

4. Sal Rei, Boa Vista

  • Description: Boa Vista’s waters are great for fishing both near the shore and offshore. Its long sandy beaches and reefs also offer good shore-fishing spots.
  • Fish Species: Tuna, wahoo, sailfish, jackfish.
  • Best Season: March to September for big-game species.

5. Maio Island

  • Description: Maio is more off-the-beaten-path, offering a peaceful environment for anglers looking for shore fishing and deep-sea fishing charters. Its waters are less crowded, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet fishing experience.
  • Fish Species: Barracuda, grouper, snapper, tuna.
  • Best Season: Year-round, with peak times between May and September.
