Cape Verde fishing

Fishing in Cape Verde

The Cape Verde archipelago lies 370 nautical miles off the coast of Senegal and is best known for its excellent marlin fishing. But in the off-season, when the wind is not so strong, Cape Verde is a paradise for jiggers. Many large fish have been caught on the steep edges of the islands, and the potential is great; so far, only the surface has been scratched here. Surface fishing is limited to tuna and, near the coast, horseeye jacks. Coastal fishing is somewhat difficult due to the difficult accessibility of the spots, but once you have made it to one of the accessible cliffs, very good catches are possible here.

Fishing spots:

1. São Vicente (Mindelo)

Description: Mindelo on São Vicente is one of the best places for deep-sea fishing. The deep waters around the islands are rich in large fish, especially marlin and tuna. Jigging yields large almaco and amberjacks.
Season: The best time for jigging is from October onwards, when the sea becomes calmer.

2. Santiago (Praia)

Description: Santiago, the largest island in Cape Verde, offers excellent opportunities for coastal and deep-sea fishing. There are several species of fish that can be caught around the island, including swordfish and dorado.
Season: Deep-sea fishing is possible all year round, but the high season for marlin and other species is from March to June. Shore fishing is best in October and November.

3. Sal

Description: Sal is known for its clear waters and diverse fish species, making it a great destination for sport fishermen. Barracuda, wahoo, and tuna are caught here. This charter worked great for us!
Season: Fishing is possible all year round, but the months between May and October are particularly productive. Shore fishing is best from October onwards, when the sea becomes calmer.

4. Boa Vista

Description: In addition to its paradise beaches, Boa Vista also offers great fishing opportunities. Here you can fish from the shore or go on deep-sea fishing trips.
