Tuna fishing with artificial lures has opened up to an ever larger fishing community in recent years. Through sustainable management, especially the stock of bluefin tuna has recovered to such an extent that targeted fishing in the Mediterranean and Atlantic is again very promising.
1. Azores, Portugal
- Best for: Bluefin tuna and bigeye tuna.
- Why: The Azores are considered one of the best places in Europe for big-game fishing, and tuna is plentiful. The surrounding waters are rich with nutrients, attracting large schools of tuna, particularly in the summer months.
2. Canary Islands, Spain
- Best for: Yellowfin and bigeye tuna.
- Why: With warm waters year-round, the Canary Islands are a prime destination for sport fishermen looking to catch tuna, especially from spring through fall. The migratory patterns of various tuna species pass through these islands. Teneriffa is known for its monster tuna up to 300kg, landed every year with spinning tackle.
3. Bay of Biscay, Spain & France
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: The Bay of Biscay, particularly off the coast of northern Spain and southwestern France, is known for its rich marine life and large bluefin tuna. The peak season is generally from late spring to early autumn.
4. Balearic Islands, Spain
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: The waters around the Balearic Islands, particularly Ibiza and Mallorca, are excellent for bluefin tuna fishing. The season runs from May to October, and you can find large schools of bluefin in these areas.
5. Italian Coast (Sardinia and Sicily)
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: Sardinia and Sicily are famous for their rich fishing culture, and the surrounding Mediterranean waters are home to large populations of bluefin tuna. The best time for tuna fishing here is from late spring to early summer.
6. Croatian Coast (Adriatic Sea)
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: The Adriatic Sea offers excellent bluefin tuna fishing opportunities. Popular spots include around the islands of Vis, Hvar, and Brač. The season usually runs from May to September.
7. French Riviera, France
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: The Mediterranean waters off the coast of the French Riviera, including Cannes and Nice, offer good bluefin tuna fishing. The peak season is typically from June to October.
8. Ireland’s South Coast (Cork & Kerry)
- Best for: Bluefin tuna.
- Why: Ireland’s south coast, particularly off the shores of Cork and Kerry, is becoming an increasingly popular spot for big-game tuna fishing, especially in the late summer and autumn when large bluefin tuna migrate through the area.
