FISHING SUDAN
Sudan with its 650 km of almost uninhabited coastline bordering offers the best fishery in the Red Sea. The coast offers a wide range of fishing possibilities (reefs, lagoons, mangroves) so it is possible to catch a broad variety of fish. On topwater you’ll most likely catch GTs, Barracuda and Bluefin Trevallies, when jigging Dogtooth Tuna, Coral Trout and Grouper are very common. On top you can experience awesome fishing from the shore!
Best fishing spots
1. Sanganeb Atoll (Central / Port Sudan)
Rising directly from the abyss just north of Port Sudan, this highly recognizable atoll features a massive coral structure wrapped in deep blue water.
-
The Environment: Dramatic vertical walls that plunge hundreds of meters down, combined with two vast underwater plateaus (Southwest and North) that step down from $4text{m}$ to $30text{m}$, and then drop off completely.
-
Popping: The wave-washed shallow reef crests and craggy coral canyons are prime territory. Casting heavy $100text{g} – 150text{g}$ cupped poppers and sinking stickbaits into the whitewash triggers aggressive, shallow-water strikes from trophy Giant Trevally (GT) and large Bluefin Trevally.
-
Jigging: The multi-stepped southwest plateau is built for speed jigging. Dropping heavy knife jigs along the current-swept ledges produces massive Dogtooth Tuna, Almaco Jacks, and large groupers.
2. Sha’ab Rumi (Central)
Legendary for Jacques Cousteau’s underwater experiments, this reef is equally famous among extreme anglers for its sheer concentration of aggressive pelagics.
-
The Environment: A pristine reef system featuring a highly dynamic South Plateau buffeted by relentless, shifting currents.
-
Popping: The current rips forming at the corners of the plateau act as a conveyor belt for baitfish. Working aggressive topwater stickbaits through these zones draws immediate attention from giant Bohar Snappers (Red Bass), large Barracuda, and cruising GTs.
-
Jigging: This is an exceptional zone for heavy vertical jigging right off the edge of the plateau into the deep blue. The vertical drop-offs hold resident schools of grey reef sharks, but deeper down 50-90 meters, fast-pitched jigs are highly effective for large Dogtooth Tuna and trophy Coral Trout.
3. Angarosh Reef & Abington (The Far North)
Known locally as the “Mother of Sharks,” Angarosh is an isolated, deep-water ocean pinnacle rising out of the depths.
-
The Environment: Extreme, open-ocean exposure with massive currents. The reef wall drops almost completely vertically into the abyss on all sides, creating an intense pelagic staging area.
-
Jigging: This is arguably the premier heavy-tackle speed jigging playground in the Red Sea. Because the current is incredibly powerful, you must deploy heavy, hydrodynamic jigs on PE8–PE10 setups to stay vertical. Hooking into triple-digit Dogtooth Tuna that immediately dive for the vertical structure is a regular occurrence here.
-
Popping: Casting long, floating pencil poppers and stickbaits far out into the blue water from the reef’s tip targets massive, free-roaming pelagics like Wahoo, Sailfish, and ocean-going GTs riding the current.
4. The Suakin Archipelago (The Deep South)
For anglers searching for ultimate, virginal waters, the remote islands and reefs of the Suakin group (including Jumna Reef, Sha’ab Ambar, and Protector Reef) are unmatched.
-
The Environment: A sprawling collection of isolated low-lying islands, massive sand flats, and completely unpressured barrier reefs sitting over deep water.
-
Popping: The massive shallow flats and reef fringes are legendary. You can literally walk the reef edge or fish from light tenders, launching heavy surface lures over the shallow coral shelves. The GT fishing here is pure chaos—unpressured fish that will smash a popper multiple times on a single retrieve.
-
Jigging: The outer barrier drop-offs of reefs like Jumna are practically untouched by commercial pressure. Multiple hookups on mid-to-large sized Dogtooth Tuna on the very first drop are common, alongside heavy-duty encounters with monster Black Groupers and giant African Pompano.
