FISHING IN EGYPT

Egypt is one of the most popular destinations for fishing for tropical predators due to its quick accessibility. The Red Sea offers a wide variety of fishing spots and therefore a wide range of catchable fish species. Due to the strong tourism and the high fishing pressure associated with it, however, one should visit secluded places in order to achieve good catches. When popping, it is mostly GTs, Coral Trouts and Barracudas that one can catch. When Jigging Dogtooth tunas and Groupers are the most sought after species. There are also a lot of interesting places for fishing from the shore for Bluefin trevally and Triggerfish.

Best fishing spots

1. St. John’s Reef Complex (Habili Ali & Habili Gafaar)

Sunken reefs near the Sudanese border constantly buffeted by open-ocean currents.

• Popping: Heavy 100g–160g stickbaits over the shallow reef crowns for Giant Trevally (GT) and aggressive Bohar Snapper.

• Jigging: Sheer drop-offs past 70 meters are prime for Dogtooth Tuna, Amberjacks, and heavy Groupers using 200g–350g knife jigs.

2. Rocky Island & Zabargad Island

Isolated oceanic islands sitting 70 km offshore with vertical walls dropping into the abyss.

• Jigging: Egypt’s top arena for heavy speed jigging (PE8–PE10). Fast-sinking 250g–400g jigs on the deep northern faces target triple-digit Dogtooth Tuna and Almaco Jacks.

• Popping: High-energy whitewash holds large, free-roaming oceanic GTs and Barracuda.

3. Fury Shoals (Sha’ab Maksur)

A massive reef system featuring a long, narrow northern plateau that steps into deep water.

• Popping & Jigging: Excellent ambush point. Cast stickbaits along the blue-water edge for Wahoo and mid-sized tuna, or switch to slow-pitch jigging along the 40m–80m ledges for trophy Coral Trout and Groupers.
