Fishing Hawaii

GT Fishing Hawaii

Hawaii is the country which you automatically link with the Giant Trevally. In Hawaii this fish is a national icon and monster class Ulua have always been caught around the islands. The fishery is among the best in the world, regarding the size and quantity of these fish. The great thing about Hawaii is that you have the chance to catch those fish from shore along with many other species. Best equipment is need to land the fish on the rocky terrain. Solely the jigging isn’t really developed on this great island, but monster fish are awaiting in the deep abyss if you have a skilled captain.

Best fishing spots

1. The Big Island (South Point & Kona Coast)

  • The Environment: Raw, extreme volcanic geology. South Point (Ka Lae) is famous worldwide for its sheer cliffs and powerful ocean currents where the island shelf drops instantly into thousands of feet of water.

  • The Action: This is a high-stakes arena for both boat-based casting and extreme land-based cliff popping. Launching large, loud chuggers and heavy floating stickbaits directly into the high-energy whitewash where waves crash against the black lava cliffs triggers violent, spectacular strikes from massive resident Ulua.

2. Maui County (Molokai & Lanai Channels)

  • The Environment: The windswept channels separating Maui, Molokai, and Lanai provide some of the most productive and least pressured boat-based topwater grounds in the Main Islands.

  • The Action: Drifting the expansive shallow coral reef shelves and outer drop-offs (ranging from 15 to 120 feet) is the primary strategy. Long, aggressive sweeps with large wood or resin stickbaits excel here, calling trophy GTs and large, aggressive Omilu out of the deep coral heads.

3. Kauai & Niihau

  • The Environment: As the oldest of the main islands, Kauai features heavily eroded underwater structures, deep caves, and rugged coastlines—particularly along the remote, inaccessible Na Pali Coast.

  • The Action: The extreme current zones and isolated pinnacle reefs around Kauai, as well as the channel crossings toward the private island of Niihau, are pure heavy-tackle territory. Hooking a fish over this terrain requires maximum drag pressure on PE8–PE10 configurations to lock down the fish before it dives straight into a sharp, underwater lava tube.

4. Oahu (South Shore Ledges & Windward Barrier Reefs)

  • The Environment: Oahu faces the highest local fishing pressure, making it the ultimate testing ground for highly technical, specialized boat-based popping charters departing from hubs like Keehi Lagoon.

  • The Action: Captains drift the precise outer edges of the barrier reefs, casting over the shallow-to-deep transitions. Because these fish are highly educated, success requires flawless casting accuracy and refined lure selections. Downsizing to technical, mid-sized Japanese chuggers or employing highly erratic stickbait presentations is often the secret to fooling these smart, heavy-set brutes.
