GT FISHING GREAT BARRIER REEF
The Great Barrier Reef lies off the eastern coast of Australia and offers more species to catch than any other location. Whether you like jigging for dogtooth, popping for GTs or just cast small lures at emperors and queenfish, you could fish there your whole life and still wouldn’t get bored.
You can attempt to fish this area yourself but in the last few years there are some new charter companies besides Nomad Sportfishing which makes the whole experience of fishing the outer reefs reasonably affordable. We recommend natural decors for GT fishing, as most of the spots are shallow and have a high visibility.
Best spots for GT Fishing
To get the absolute best out of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) for heavy topwater popping and vertical jigging, you have to bypass the inner reefs and target the remote outer edges and isolated Coral Sea atolls where the continental shelf plummets into the abyss.
The premier sectors for locking horns with massive Giant Trevally (GT) and freight-train pelagics include:
1. The Far Northern Reefs (Bligh Reef, Mantis Reef & Raine Island Sector)
This is a completely pristine, ultra-remote frontier accessible only via long-range liveaboard expeditions departing from Cooktown or Lockhart River.
-
The Environment: Wild, unpressured barrier reefs exposed to the full force of the Pacific Ocean.
-
Popping: This is arguably the ultimate arena on earth for trophy GTs (40kg+). The shallow reef points, massive pressure waves, and isolated coral bommies hold incredibly aggressive, unpressured fish. Ripping large wood or resin stickbaits and heavy-cupped chuggers through the whitewash triggers violent, competitive surface strikes.
2. Bugatti Reef & The Swains (Southern GBR)
Located in the southern sector of the GBR reef matrix, the Swains feature an intricate labyrinth of outer barrier reefs famous for massive tidal ranges and violent current movements.
-
The Environment: A maze of high-relief coral structures and deep channels buffeted by immense volumes of moving water.
-
The Action: Bugatti Reef is legendary among heavy-tackle purists for producing uniquely thick, deep-bodied brute GTs. The strategy involves positioning the boat on the up-current side of shallow coral structures and casting heavy topwater plugs directly over the shallow reef flats. Dropping fast knife jigs or heavy slow-pitch jigs along the outer edges yields an insane variety of reef species, including trophy Green Jobfish, monster Coral Trout, and massive Almaco Jacks.
3. The Ribbon Reefs (Northern GBR)
A famous 50-mile chain of narrow barrier reefs stretching north from Port Douglas up to Lizard Island.
-
The Environment: Long, continuous reef lines broken up by narrow, deep-water passes that act as giant natural funnels for baitfish.
-
The Action: The deep passes between the ribbons (such as the infamous Number 10 Ribbon Reef) create intense upwellings. Working large, sinking stickbaits or floating poppers along the blue-water boundaries of these gaps targets cruising GTs, large Spanish Mackerel, and aggressive Red Bass. Switching to the jig along the 40m–80m drop-offs provides excellent technical action for Amberjacks and various Grouper species.
