Best fishing spots
1. Kadavu & The Great Astrolabe Reef
This is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world and represents Fiji’s ultimate heavy-tackle frontier.
-
The Environment: A massive, unpressured reef system wrapped around Kadavu Island in the deep south, featuring massive ocean passes and sheer walls plunging into the abyss.
-
Popping: The outer reef edges and high-energy ocean passes are legendary for monster GTs. Launching 130g–180g chuggers and stickbaits into the current rips where the tide pushes bait fish onto the reef flats triggers catastrophic surface bites.
-
Jigging: The deep walls of the passages are premier territory for trophy Dogtooth Tuna. Dropping 250g–400g fast-sinking knife jigs on PE8–PE10 setups along the 50m to 100m drop-offs is mandatory to stop these fish before they cut you off on the coral.
2. Mamanuca Islands (Namotu Island & Wilkes Pass)
If you want elite, technical boat-based operations with immediate access to deep water right off the reef flat, the waters surrounding Namotu are world-famous.
-
The Environment: A collection of barrier reefs, shallow coral shoals, and steep ocean shelves just a short boat ride from the setups.
-
Popping: Exceptional for casting over shallow coral bommies and current lines. Flawless long-casting with technical stickbaits or mid-sized Japanese poppers will draw out big GTs, electric Bluefin Trevally (Omilu), and large Bohar Snappers (Red Bass).
-
Jigging: Just outside the reef break, the shelf plummets. Deep-water jigging here yields solid Dogtooth Tuna, Green Jobfish, and heavy Coral Trout.
3. Vanua Levu (Savusavu & Namena Marine Reserve)
The waters around Fiji’s second-largest island offer pristine, untouched reef complexes. The jewel in the crown here is the protected Namena Barrier Reef.
-
The Environment: Hundreds of isolated coral castles (bommies) that rise from 100-foot depths up to within a few feet of the surface.
-
The Action: Position your boat on the up-current side of these isolated structures. Ripping large surface plugs across the tops of the coral bommies is highly productive. The GTs here are notoriously aggressive and will repeatedly smash a lure on a single retrieve. Expect secondary encounters with Walu (Spanish Mackerel), which frequently skyrocket plugs 20 feet into the air.
4. Taveuni Island & Somosomo Strait
Known as the “Garden Island,” Taveuni sits next to a deep, narrow strait that acts as a massive funnel for nutrient-rich currents.
-
The Environment: Violent tidal movements push massive amounts of water through the Somosomo Strait, creating an absolute conveyor belt of food for apex predators.
-
The Action: The extreme current rips are an exceptional ambush zone. Casting heavy sinking stickbaits along the blue-water boundaries yields fast pelagic action. When switching to a heavy jigging game along the deep ledge transitions, you are right in the strike zone for big Dogtooth and trophy-sized groupers.
